Del Monte commits to net-zero target, reduces carbon footprint in ESG report

Del Monte Foods has released its Fiscal Year 2023 ESG report, detailing significant strides toward its 2025 ESG targets and showcasing its commitment to sustainable business practices. 

This includes noteworthy progress in several key environmental areas. In the realm of carbon footprint reduction, the company reported a 6% reduction in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions since 2021. Alongside this, it has committed to a net-zero target by 2050, aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative. 

Other achievements include: 

  • Regenerative Agriculture: Del Monte has established a forum for organic tomato growers to exchange best practices and advance regenerative agriculture efforts.
  • Sustainable Packaging: The company has started using post-consumer resin in its plastic beverage cups and is working towards making all plastic packaging recyclable, reusable, or compostable by 2030.

“Sustainability is not only good for the planet — it’s simply good business,” said ESG director Molly Laverty. “This report reflects our dedication to integrating our purpose into every aspect of our operations as we continue to do our part to build a more sustainable future for generations to come.”

Del Monte Foods: Beyond environmental sustainability

Outside of its commitments to environmental sustainability, Del Monte Foods has detailed its commitment to its surrounding community. Various initiatives have been put in place to encourage community engagement. 

Such initiatives include: 

  • Nourishing Families by Nourishing Schools: In partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, this $5 million initiative reached 1.25 million families and over 4,000 schools in 2023. The program focuses on the well-being of children, particularly those from Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities.
  • Charitable Contributions: Employees participated in a Donation Matching Program, supporting their chosen nonprofits, while the company donated over 4.7 million pounds of food valued at more than $3.3 million through collaborations with the American Red Cross and Feeding America.

Del Monte Foods is also dedicated to nurturing its workforce through various initiatives:

  • Inclusive Culture: The company scored a top mark of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2023-24 Corporate Equality Index, reflecting its commitment to LGBTQ+ equality and inclusion.
  • Diversity in Leadership: Over 50% of senior management roles are held by women and people of color, marking an 8% increase since 2020.
  • Educational Support: The company launched a scholarship program, awarding $5,000 college scholarships to ten children of team members.
