SunOpta, a leader in natural food products, has recently announced its 2023 ESG Report, marking significant strides in sustainability within the plant-based food and beverage sector. As the company celebrates its 50th anniversary, this report emphasizes advancements in their operations and community impacts.
Brian Kocher, CEO of SunOpta, stressed the company’s enduring mission to embed sustainability in every facet of its operations. “Sustainability isn’t just a part of our history; it’s the core of our future strategy,” said Kocher. He reiterates the company’s commitment to innovative practices that enhance environmental and social outcomes.
The 2023 ESG report highlights include the installation of 742 solar panels at the company’s headquarters. These panels are projected to produce 447,667 kilowatt-hours annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 317 metric tons each year. Furthermore, a new warehouse in Alexandria, Minnesota, has been set up to cut approximately 100,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually, enhancing the efficiency of SunOpta’s distribution network.
SunOpta has also seen remarkable gains in water conservation, reporting a savings of 40.4 billion gallons due to its focus on plant-based production methods. Progress towards waste reduction is notable, with six out of seven manufacturing facilities achieving zero waste-to-landfill status, underscoring the company’s commitment to minimal environmental impact.
Product innovation remains a cornerstone of SunOpta’s strategy. The launch of OatGold, an oat protein powder featured in the first-ever Oat Protein Cereal by Seven Sundays, highlights SunOpta’s leadership in upcycled foods. Additionally, the company continues to expand its portfolio of Non-GMO Project verified products, ensuring high standards of food safety and quality.
SunOpta: Beyond sustainability
The report also details SunOpta’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, with 49% of director-level and above positions held by women, nearing their goal of 50%. Governance has been strengthened by the appointment of a dedicated full-time sustainability director, enhancing leadership around ESG initiatives.
In community engagement, SunOpta has made significant contributions, donating 3.4 million pounds of food to Feeding America, equivalent to 2.8 million meals. This effort is part of a broader commitment to nourish communities and reduce food insecurity.
