CSM Ingredients group has published its third Sustainability Report, highlighting its progress in renewable energy adoption and responsible sourcing practices. The food ingredients company now sources 62% of its electricity from renewable sources and has achieved a 73% waste recycling rate.
CSM Ingredients: Environmental progress
The company’s sustainability efforts in 2023 focused on establishing baseline measurements for environmental impact. A significant portion of its renewable energy consumption, 95%, is certified with Guarantees of Origin (GOs), demonstrating the company’s commitment to verifiable clean energy sourcing.
In its raw materials procurement, CSM Ingredients sources 74% of its palm oil through Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) mass balance or segregated certifications. For cocoa sourcing, 55% of direct supplies are certified under Rainforest Alliance standards.
The company has updated its Supplier Code of Conduct and joined Sedex, the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, to better monitor and address supply chain risks.
The company’s circular economy efforts have resulted in 73% of total waste being directed toward recycling, recovery, or reuse. Their packaging initiatives have achieved an 87% recyclability rate for both primary and secondary packaging, with paper packaging containing 62% recycled content.
Product Innovation and Research
CSM Ingredients’ research and development efforts have yielded several new products in 2023, including:
- An advanced clean-label version of the plant-based fat system MirrorTissue
- Egg-reduction systems including Magic GLAZE for bakery goods
- VEGANEEZ, an allergen-free system for plant-based sauces
- FRESKO, a clean label enzymatic fresh-keeping system
Workforce Development
The company reports that 32% of new hires in 2023 were under 30 years old, primarily replacing retiring employees. This initiative is part of their workforce generational mix rebalancing plan.
