Las Vegas Sands has made substantial progress on food sustainability initiatives according to its newly released 2024 ESG report. The hospitality giant prevented, rescued or diverted 29% of its food waste in 2024, already surpassing its 2025 target of 25%.

The company also advanced its commitment to animal welfare by significantly increasing its cage-free egg procurement. By the end of 2024, 18% of eggs sourced across Sands properties were cage-free, a notable increase from just 3% in 2023. This progress supports the company’s goal of transitioning to 100% cage-free eggs by 2028.

These food-focused initiatives form part of the company’s broader Planet pillar within its ESG strategy, which emphasizes reducing environmental impact across operations. The food waste diversion achievements complement the company’s overall waste management progress, which saw a 6% increase in operational waste diversion compared to its 2019 baseline, exceeding the 5% improvement targeted for 2025.

“In 2025, we are focused on closing the gaps around our 2025 goals and continuing to push ahead in areas where we’ve achieved our ambitions or are currently surpassing our targets,” said Katarina Tesarova, senior vice president and chief sustainability officer. “We are motivated to aim higher as we set our sights on a strong finish to our current reporting period and prepare to establish new goals for our 2026-2030 cycle.”

Sands Beyond Food: Additional sustainability achievements

Sands is performing ahead of schedule on its emissions reduction targets, with scope 1 and 2 emissions down 50% in 2024 compared to the 2018 base year, far exceeding its 17.5% reduction goal for 2025. In 2024, the company also released its first low-carbon transition plan, which established a new 30% emissions-reduction target aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C scenario, to be achieved by 2025.

Water conservation efforts also saw substantial progress, with the company reducing potable water use intensity by 11% from the 2019 base year, ahead of its 3% reduction target for 2025. Additionally, Sands continued its progress toward eliminating single-use plastics, achieving 62% of its goal to transition to 100% sustainable solutions for Sands-branded water bottles by the end of 2025.

The company has already surpassed two major goals under its People and Communities pillars. By the end of 2024, Sands had invested $220 million in workforce development initiatives, exceeding its $200 million target for 2025. Team Members also contributed 255,955 volunteer hours between 2021-2024, surpassing the goal of 250,000 hours by 2025.

In recognition of these achievements, Sands was included in the 2024 Dow Jones Sustainability World and North America Indices, Newsweek’s 2025 America’s Most Responsible Companies list, and the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2025, where it ranked among the top 10% of global ESG scores.
