Wonder deploys free battery storage across 21 NYC locations to cut energy costs and support grid stability

This is in partnership with David Energy, reducing peak electricity demand at all-electric kitchens while lowering annual operational costs and supporting grid stability during peak demand periods.

Wonder, a vertically integrated food technology platform operating 140 physical locations across the Northeast, announced the deployment of free 120-volt plug-in batteries across 21 NYC restaurants in partnership with David Energy, an energy supplier providing battery-integrated electricity management. The batteries charge when electricity costs are lowest and discharge during peak-price hours, reducing Wonder’s electricity bills by thousands of dollars annually per location while reducing peak demand on New York’s grid.

The deployment demonstrates how food service operations with all-electric kitchens can leverage intelligent energy management technology to simultaneously reduce operational costs and support grid stability. By offsetting power usage through battery storage, Wonder participates in grid support programs that reduce reliance on polluting peaker power plants during peak demand periods — particularly critical during New York’s hottest summer days when grid stress is highest.

“As we grow our real estate footprint, we’re constantly evaluating solutions that can improve operational efficiency across our locations,” said Abe Nasrallah, Senior Vice President of Development at Wonder. “David Energy’s batteries were simple to install, required minimal operational changes, and are expected to deliver meaningful cost savings across our New York City locations.”

Grid Stability and Environmental Benefits

The battery deployment supports grid stability at critical moments when peak demand threatens reliability and forces utilities to activate polluting peaker power plants. By reducing peak demand through battery discharge during high-price periods, Wonder’s deployment collectively reduces stress on New York’s electrical grid while avoiding emissions that would result from traditional peak power generation.

Many of Wonder’s locations are enrolled in grid support programs rewarding businesses for reducing consumption during peak demand hours. These programs help prevent power outages while reducing dependency on fossil fuel-powered peaker plants that operate only during highest demand periods, when environmental and health costs are greatest.

“The team at Wonder really understands how these small batteries can be a game changer for their operations,” said James McGinniss, CEO of David Energy. “We’re excited to be able to bring this cutting-edge battery technology to a partner that is a leader in food tech.”

All-Electric Kitchen Infrastructure

Wonder’s commitment to all-electric kitchens eliminates on-site combustion emissions while creating flexibility for demand-responsive operation. Electric cooking systems operating with battery storage can shift electricity consumption to off-peak hours, reducing both costs and grid stress simultaneously.

The battery integration into all-electric kitchens demonstrates how electrification and intelligent energy management create synergies neither achieves alone. Traditional gas kitchens cannot participate in demand-response programs, while electric kitchens without storage must draw from the grid continuously regardless of price or grid stress.

Future Integration and Scalability

Wonder and David Energy are collaborating on back-of-house design for new 2027 locations in New York City to optimize battery placement and operational integration from initial build stages. The planned integration demonstrates how energy infrastructure can be factored into restaurant development strategy rather than retrofitted afterward.

David Energy, ranked among the top 250 sustainability-focused companies in the U.S. by Time magazine, provides plug-in battery systems without capital investment requirements, operational disruption, or upfront installation costs.
