Mars, a global leader in snacking with brands from Snickers to Mars Bars, has teamed up with Unreasonable Group to launch Unreasonable Food. This three-year partnership aims to support rapid growth companies positioned to redefine the food supply chain, with sustainability as a main focus.
Unreasonable Food will concentrate on four critical areas: Shaping the Future of Food, Improving Farmer Livelihood, Transforming Food Supply Chains, and Reimagining Sustainable Packaging. These pillars will guide the selection and acceleration of growth-stage companies that can address Mars Snacking’s sustainability challenges effectively.
The partnership plans to build a portfolio of around 40 innovative solutions over three years, aiming to address key sustainability challenges in Mars Snacking’s operations. The first cohort of ventures and mentors will be announced this spring, kicking off with a week-long gathering to foster collaboration and mentorship.
“More than 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity can be attributed to the way we produce, process, and package food,” said Unreasonable Group CEO Daniel Epstein.
“As one of the world’s largest food companies with some of the world’s most admired brands, Mars Snacking, in partnership with Unreasonable and the entrepreneurs we support together, is uniquely positioned to put that statistic where it belongs — in a museum. We cannot imagine a more compelling partner to set a new standard for sustainability in our food systems than Mars.”
Mars and Unreasonable Group: Supporting Mars’ Net Zero roadmap
The partnership further aligns with Mars’ Net Zero roadmap, which was announced late last year. Here, the Snickers company revealed an investment of $1 billion to slash 50% of its emissions by 2030, alongside other goals.
“Mars is committed to improving sustainability and quality of lives throughout the food supply chain – our brands and their global communities have the reach and scale to make meaningful impact, helping shape real change,” said Mars Snacking’s chief growth officer Gulen Bengi.
Global vice president Amanda Davies added: “Mars has the experience, the energy, and the footprint to shape the food future. Doing nothing is not an option.”
