Emory’s Office of Sustainability Initiatives has been pivotal in advancing sustainable food initiatives. The university’s efforts include a commitment to sourcing local and sustainable food through the Sustainability Guidelines for Food Purchasing. Programs such as the Emory Farmers Market, Oxford Organic Farm, and the Emory Educational Garden Project encourage community members to engage with small-scale producers, supporting the local economy and fostering a robust sustainable food system. Since its inception, students have spent over $800,000 from their meal plans at the Emory Farmers Market, showcasing the community’s dedication to enjoying fresh, local food.
Moreover, Emory collaborates with The Conservation Fund to support local farmers and has developed a Food Security Resource Guide to assist community members facing food insecurity. These initiatives underscore Emory’s commitment to not only enhancing food sustainability but also addressing broader social issues within the community.
Emory University’s commitment to sustainability
In addition to its food sustainability efforts, Emory actively engages its students and employees in sustainability initiatives. The university supports various student sustainability groups and hosts numerous engagement opportunities on campus. The annual Student Sustainability Showcase allows students to present innovative environmental projects, fostering a culture of sustainability among future leaders. The Piedmont Project equips faculty to integrate sustainability into their curricula, ensuring that sustainability is a fundamental part of the educational experience.
Preorientation programs, including the IGNITE sustainability track and resident advisor sustainability training, introduce incoming students to Emory’s green initiatives, further embedding sustainability into campus culture. Funding opportunities like the Incentives Fund from the Office of Sustainability Initiatives empower the Emory community to implement new ideas and conduct research that fosters innovation, knowledge-sharing, and positive behavioral changes on campus.
“All of us at AASHE extend our warmest congratulations to Emory University for their achievement,” says Meghan Fay Zahniser, AASHE’s executive director. “By fostering sustainable practices and initiatives, you set an inspiring example for your peers and future generations.
