Charoen Pokphand Foods (CP Foods) recently announced the relaunch of its egg tray packaging, made entirely from 100% recycled plastic. This packaging is composed of 55% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and 45% post-industrial recycled (PIR) plastic, featuring paper labels to facilitate waste separation and recycling. These trays are now widely available in retail stores across Thailand.

Kitti Wangwiwatsilp, CP Foods director of packaging research and development, emphasized the environmental benefits of using fully recycled plastic for their fresh egg trays. “Using fully recycled plastic for our fresh egg trays significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 29% compared to virgin plastic packaging,” he said in a statement.

This initiative is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to incorporate more recycled materials in its packaging, in line with its commitment to heart-healthy food production and broader environmental goals. The company is working towards achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.

CP Foods: Targeting sustainable food products

Earlier this year, CP Foods outlined its ambition to derive 40% of its revenue from environmentally friendly products by 2030. In line with this goal, the company has developed 880 products that have undergone carbon footprint assessments by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO).

In addition to its packaging innovations, CP Foods has taken a step in producing environmentally friendly products with the creation of carbon-neutral cage-free eggs. The company’s carbon-neutral eggs show a 30% GHG emission reduction compared to the industry average.

Somkid Wannalukkhee, head of the company’s egg sector, detailed the measures taken to achieve this status:

  • Installing a smart egg conveyor system to reduce food loss and damaged eggs
  • Using crushed eggshells as soil improvement material
  • Adopting renewable energy sources like biogas and solar panels in layer farms and processing plants
  • Offsetting remaining emissions through carbon credit purchases

Looking ahead, CP Foods plans to develop a cage-free layer facility that operates entirely on renewable energy, furthering its commitment to sustainable practices.
