TIPA Compostable Packaging has launched certified home compostable labels for fresh produce, addressing contamination issues in organic waste streams where traditional produce stickers rank among the top five most persistent contaminants in compost systems.
The labels were developed in collaboration with Bio4Life, utilizing BioTAK adhesive technology that meets European compost standards without leaving residue. The solution targets growing regulatory requirements for compostable labeling as policies emerge globally to reduce microplastic pollution in organic waste processing.
“Labels on fresh produce have traditionally been made from conventional plastic that cannot be recycled and are often discarded in food waste bins, contaminating organic streams and contributing to microplastic pollution,” said Daphna Nissenbaum, co-founder and CEO of TIPA.
The pressure-sensitive adhesive enables strong adherence across diverse produce surfaces, from smooth banana and mango skins to complex, textured surfaces of oranges and cantaloupe, while maintaining removability without residue.
Technical specifications address industry requirements
The compostable labels demonstrate moisture resistance while maintaining flexibility required for fresh produce applications. Key features include compatibility with conventional label printing presses, functionality with both machine and hand application techniques, and certification for direct food contact safety. According to the company, the labels maintain durability in cold and moist conditions typical of fresh produce storage and distribution environments.
The launch responds to both market demand and emerging regulations requiring compostable alternatives to conventional plastic labels. Several jurisdictions have implemented or proposed policies mandating compostable labeling for organic waste compatibility.
Bio4Life’s BioTAK represents the first adhesive technology fully certified to European compost standards, addressing technical challenges that previously limited compostable label adoption. The partnership combines TIPA’s compostable film expertise with specialized adhesive technology for fresh produce applications.
The solution complements TIPA’s broader portfolio of compostable flexible packaging for fresh produce, enabling comprehensive sustainability approaches for growers and retailers. This integrated offering addresses supply chain coordination challenges where multiple packaging components require consistent end-of-life processing.
The certified home compostable produce labels will be available through TIPA’s existing distribution channels.
