Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) Dining has elevated its Green Restaurant Association (GRA) certification from two stars to three stars, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability journey. This achievement highlights the dining service’s commitment to enhancing its environmentally conscious initiatives, primarily through the expansion of vegan and vegetarian dining options.

The GRA certification assesses various aspects of restaurant operations, including energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable food sourcing. PLNU Dining accumulated significantly more than the required 175 GreenPoints necessary for the three-star rating by implementing these practices. Key initiatives included the introduction of a more extensive plant-based menu, which aligns with current trends toward healthier eating and sustainability.

“Achieving this three-star rating reflects our dedication to making dining at PLNU as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible,” said Timothy Fessler, General Manager of PLNU Dining. “By incorporating more plant-based options and working with partners like FreshPoint, we’ve been able to offer healthier choices while lowering our environmental footprint.”

In addition to expanding its plant-based offerings, PLNU Dining has also focused on minimizing single-use disposables, enhancing recycling programs, and sourcing sustainable produce. The dining service’s commitment to sustainability further extends to energy-efficient practices, the use of eco-friendly cleaning products, and improved waste management systems.

These efforts are part of PLNU’s overarching mission to provide students with nutritious and environmentally sustainable dining options, ultimately contributing to a healthier campus environment and a greener future. By achieving the three-star GRA certification, PLNU Dining not only underscores its commitment to sustainability but also sets a benchmark for other institutions looking to improve their dining operations in an environmentally responsible manner.
