Nestlé comes out on top in coffee sustainability rankings

The company placed first in the 2023 Coffee Brew Index for its “cohesive and comprehensive” coffee sustainability strategy.

Nestlé has been branded the industry leader for coffee sustainability in the 2023 Coffee Brew Index. In particular, it was commended for its cohesive and comprehensive coffee sustainability strategy, and its policies, objectives, and actions were further recognized to include social, environmental, and economic dimensions of coffee production.

Published by the Coffee Barometer, the report evaluates the overall sustainability strategy of the world’s top 11 roasters, including Starbucks, Lavazza, Strauss, and Tchibo. It looks into four categories: sustainability strategy, social conditions and inclusion, environment, and sustainable purchasing and economic conditions.

Among other brands, Nestlé came out as one of the most advanced in their inclusion of deforestation as a material risk in their sustainability strategies. It was also one of a “handful” of companies with comprehensive policies addressing biodiversity, water, and ecosystem conservation in their reports.

Nestlé’s Head of Coffee Brands David Rennie expressed that the report is a recognition for the company’s “long-term commitment to coffee sustainability.

“Through our flagship programs, the Nescafé Plan and the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality program, we are working every day with coffee farmers to help ensure that the farming and production of coffee is sustainable and socially and economically inclusive,” he said.

The Nespresso AAA program and Nescafé Plan 2030 were both highlighted by the report for placing notable emphasis on coffee sustainability at field level.

The report goes on to state that the company “stands to gain the most from heightened transparency in its purchasing practices reporting and an increased commitment to programs and initiatives aimed at improving farmer economic viability, encompassing aspects such as profitability and living income”.

“We are committed to continuously progress and bring new approaches to sustainable coffee farming,” Rennie reaffirmed.
