Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, Inc. has recently released its third annual ESG report. “Natural Grocers has a legacy of being a values-driven company,” said executive co-president Kemper Isely. “For over 68 years, we have demonstrated our commitment to practices that support a more sustainable and affordable food system. This year’s ESG Report showcases our rigorous product standards and our continued commitment to practices and products that support environmental and human health.”

Natural Grocers: Key ESG report 2023 highlights

Energy-saving measures include the installation of a carbon dioxide refrigeration system in a second store. This is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency compared to conventional refrigeration technologies.

Another key measure includes collaborating with local food banks, which can ensure food that would otherwise go to waste is redirected. Natural Grocers states it has continued to process and recycle waste materials across its operations. It further indicates a reduction in plastic waste through the use of sustainable packaging solutions in its bulk packaging facility.

In efforts to reduce single-use plastics, the company has continued its policy of bag-free checkouts. Reports indicate this has led to a substantial decrease in plastic bag usage. Additionally, the company has provided alternatives to conventional plastic produce bags, which include plant-based, compostable, and recycled paper options.

On top of this, the company outlines its implementation of water-saving equipment and practices in its store designs. Its product standards also include an aim to support water systems through regenerative agricultural methods and avoid farming practices that may result in water contamination.

Regenerative agriculture and organic farming practices

The company additionally outlines its sourcing of eggs from farms that meet regenerative agricultural standards. This includes offering private-label eggs sourced from regenerative certified farms. In this, Natural Grocers has become the first national retailer to offer such a product. It has also extended the certified organic requirement to its entire coffee category, ensuring support of organic farming practices and transparency.

Outside of environmental sustainability, Natural Grocers has invested more than $6 million to provide free nutrition education to its customers, crew and communities.

“We strive to work with vendors who nurture the land and the welfare of animals,” shared Isely. “We believe this vigilance also contributes to a healthier planet, thriving communities and a flourishing economy.”
