Marriott International, Inc. (Nasdaq: MAR) recently unveiled its 2024 Serve 360 Report, a detailed account of the company’s strides in ESG initiatives throughout the last calendar year. This comes with a focus on sustainability and social impact goals set for 2025.

The comprehensive report is accompanied by an “Around The World Highlights” addendum, offering insights into regional ESG activities and providing extensive data across its global operations.

At the forefront of Marriott’s environmental initiatives is its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through its Serve 360 platform. This platform steers the company’s efforts across four pivotal coordinates: Nurture Our World, Sustain Responsible Operations, Empower Through Opportunity, and Welcome All and Advance Human Rights.

While all coordinates are integral, “Nurture Our World” and “Sustain Responsible Operations” are particularly critical in directing the company’s environmental and sustainability strategies.

President and CEO Anthony Capuano emphasized Marriott’s commitment to integrating sustainability deeply within its operational ethos. “Our goal is to foster a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable world for travel, supporting the long-term success of our business while enhancing the wellbeing of our associates and guests,” said Capuano.

Marriott International: Strategic environmental initiatives

In 2023, Marriott made significant progress in climate action, a core component of its sustainability strategy. Notably, the company’s science-based emissions reduction targets were verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in April 2024, solidifying its commitment to measurable and impactful environmental goals.

Additionally, Marriott launched the Climate Action Program (CAP) globally, aimed at enhancing climate fluency across the organization and setting property-specific carbon reduction goals. This initiative underscores the company’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and meeting stringent science-based targets.

Another key environmental focus for Marriott is the expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. By the close of 2023, Marriott boasted over 7,100 EV chargers installed at more than 1,800 properties worldwide, facilitating a shift towards cleaner, renewable modes of transportation for guests.

Marriott’s commitment to animal welfare is evident in its shift towards sourcing cage-free eggs, a move that aligns with growing consumer expectations for ethical and sustainable food options. The report details a substantial increase in cage-free egg procurement, with US and Canadian properties reaching 56.13% and 47.18% respectively.

Regional highlights and global impact

Regionally, Marriott’s ESG efforts have had tangible impacts. In the UAE, Marriott’s Business Council raised nearly USD $970,000 through its Road to Awareness initiative, while conservation efforts in Mexico supported the release of approximately 110,000 sea turtles. In Asia, Marriott’s engagement with Scholars of Sustenance has rescued over 81,000 kg of surplus food, translating into significant meal donations for communities in need.

The Serve 360 Report also outlines Marriott’s broader commitment to sustainability through various global initiatives, including environmental conservation programs and partnerships aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and reducing waste.
