Griffith Foods has announced its commitment to supporting the Call to Action on Transforming Food Systems for People, Nature, and Climate (CTA), following its participation in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP28) earlier this month. The company has also urged its industry peers, governments and non-state actors to follow suit in an effort to create a more sustainable global food system.
This comes after the COP28 Declaration on Resilient Food Systems, Sustainable Agriculture, and Climate Action was put forward. Here, various heads of state and government agreed to work collaboratively to scale up efforts to equip farmers and other food producers against the effects of climate change, promote food security and nutrition by supporting vulnerable groups, maximize the climate and environmental benefits associated with agriculture and food systems, and more.
Several major food companies have put forward action plans detailing specific climate targets to achieve within the next few years. Griffith Foods has set its own 2030 Aspirations action plan, which detailed initiatives to create a sustainable food system and make a positive impact with its products.
“We are committed to working throughout our operations and value chain to accelerate our actions to achieve sustainable food systems that deliver significant progress for people, nature and climate,” said Brian Griffith, executive chairman. “We do this by sourcing sustainable raw materials used in our nutritious and delicious blends, supporting our customers in providing healthier, more affordable food products to consumers.”
Griffith Foods: 2030 Aspirations
Key components of Griffith Foods’ 2030 Aspirations, which support the Call to Action, encompass a broad range of sustainability initiatives. These include creating sustainable food system networks to restore nature and scaling regenerative farming practices to 1 million acres.
The company also aspires to progress towards Net Zero across all emissions scopes by 2040, with its interim 2030 targets already verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Griffith Foods is also focused on improving the livelihoods of 25,000 small-scale farmers and their families.
“We are committed to working throughout our operations and value chain to accelerate our actions to achieve sustainable food systems that deliver significant progress for people, nature and climate.”
On top of this, Griffith Foods aims to develop a product portfolio where 80% of the ingredients are sustainably sourced and adhering to globally accepted nutrition guidelines for 60% of its products.
The company is also dedicating a portion of its product development to alternative protein options and innovating to serve the nutritionally and economically underserved communities. This includes developing affordable and accessible products for consumers in need, with a focus initially on the elderly, children, discount retail consumers, and emergency food aid recipients.
Outside of this, Griffith Foods has signed the World Business Council on Sustainable Development Business Statement of Action. The company has called on its industry peers, governments and non-state actors to join the CTA in an effort to strengthen and build sustainable food system networks.
