CP Foods partners with SCG Packaging and SCG Chemicals on sustainable packaging initiatives

The three companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore pulp and polymer-based packaging innovations collaboratively.

Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) recently formalized a partnership with SCG Packaging Plc (SCGP) and SCG Chemicals Plc (SCGC) to create more sustainable and environmentally friendly food packaging solutions. The three companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore pulp and polymer-based packaging innovations collaboratively.

CP Foods is a leading Thai agro-industrial conglomerate known for its global poultry and shrimp production, integrated agribusiness model, and commitment to sustainability. CEO Prasit Boondoungprasert reports that 99.9% of its current packaging is either reusable, recyclable, or compostable.

Through this new collaboration, the company aims to further its commitment to environmentally friendly packaging practices. The collective vision of the trio includes setting a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050, with a significant focus on sustainable packaging.

As one of Thailand’s most prominent packaging solutions providers, SCGP is well-placed to drive more sustainable packaging initiatives forward. CEO Wichan Jitpukdee highlighted their expertise in various packaging materials, from paper pulp to sustainable polymers. 

As part of the collaboration, SCGP aims to bring this knowledge into practical applications tailored for CP Foods’ production requirements.

Globally, Thailand plays a significant role in food exports. Thailand is recognized as one of the world’s leading food exporters, renowned for its rice, poultry, seafood, and processed food products. Currently, it operates food business in 16 countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, China, the US, the UK, Sri Lanka and more.

Dr. Suracha Udomsak from SCGC emphasized that combining high-quality food with green packaging could contribute to addressing global food security challenges. 

SCGC plans to introduce innovative plastic food packaging solutions. This includes a strong emphasis on their SCGC GREEN POLYMER brand, which aligns with principles of reduced waste and carbon emissions and focuses on four core areas: resource reduction, recyclability design, recycling, and renewable resource utilization.

This collaboration among the three companies is expected to bring advancements in sustainable food packaging in Thailand and potentially set new benchmarks for the industry.
