Chartwells Higher Education, a leader in contract foodservice management, has unveiled its latest initiative, Planet Eats, at Western Washington University. This dining concept focuses on sustainability, offering low-carbon meals and educating students about eco-friendly food choices.
Planet Eats emerges in response to a growing awareness among college students about the environmental impact of their dietary choices. Recent surveys show that 70% of Gen-Zers are considering the sustainability of their food and beverages.
Monalisa Prasad, VP of Sustainability at Chartwells Higher Education, stated, “At Planet Eats, we’re not just serving meals; we’re offering educational opportunities for students to learn about sustainable living through their food choices. Our commitment to offering nutritious, sustainable, and inclusive options is clear through every dish served.”
Chartwells Higher Education: Sustainability at the Forefront
Planet Eats aims to significantly reduce food-related emissions by incorporating climate labeling and waste tracking to visibly demonstrate its impact. This initiative is a key component of the climate action plans at Chartwells’ partner institutions.
The menu at Planet Eats features low-carbon meals including fresh, seasonal, and local ingredients with an emphasis on inclusivity and sustainability. Dishes such as spicy lentil and cauliflower scramble, vegan cinnamon French toast with pumpkin spice syrup, and Nashville hot mushroom sandwich with tangy slaw highlight the plant-forward approach.
The allergen-free station offers vegan entrees free from the top 9 allergens, ensuring that all students have access to environmentally friendly and healthy food options.
Joshua LaMorre, a student at Western Washington University, expressed his appreciation for the new dining experience: “Planet Eats allows me to be more informed and conscious about my environmental impact. It’s empowering to know that my choices at the dining hall can contribute positively to the planet.”
Chartwells Higher Education is the leading provider of foodservice management and hospitality on over 300 campuses across the US. More information on Planet Eats and its other sustainability initiatives can be found on its website.
