Ajinomoto Co., Inc. and Danone have announced a global strategic partnership focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the dairy industry’s milk supply chain. This initiative leverages Ajinomoto’s AjiPro®-L, a lysine formulation known for its cost-effectiveness and capability to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. As part of Danone’s “Partner for Growth” program, the collaboration aims to make a significant impact on the environmental footprint of milk production.
AjiPro®-L effectively delivers lysine, an essential amino acid, to cows, enhancing nutrient absorption in their digestive systems. This innovative approach not only helps reduce feed costs for farmers but also lowers greenhouse gas emissions across the dairy sector. By decreasing the reliance on high-protein, high-cost feeds like soybean meal, which has a considerable carbon footprint during cultivation, AjiPro®-L aims to cut the associated carbon emissions by approximately 20%. Furthermore, it can reduce nitrous oxide emissions from manure by around 25%.

In addition to these benefits, in-vitro studies have demonstrated that combining AjiPro®-L with methane reduction additives can enhance the effectiveness of these additives by about 30%. This synergy is expected to significantly decrease methane emissions from cattle belching.
Sumio Maeda, executive officer & vice president at Ajinomoto Co., highlighted the dual benefits of AjiPro®-L, stating, “We developed the AjiPro®-L solution to help reduce feed costs and greenhouse gas emissions not only for our partners but for the entire dairy and beef industry.” He emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing human, societal, and planetary well-being through its “AminoScience” initiatives.
Jean-Yves Krummenacher, chief procurement officer at Danone, added, “With partners like Ajinomoto Co., we are expanding our toolkit of solutions to reduce on-farm greenhouse gas emissions while supporting farmers in improving their margins.”
The partnership has already resulted in a Memorandum of Understanding, with plans to introduce AjiPro®-L to Danone’s contracted farmers in Spain, Brazil, and the United States, as well as to farmers in Egypt and Morocco. Both companies aim to further integrate this solution into tools for quantifying greenhouse gas reductions.
