Zomato, a leading online food delivery platform, has pledged to transition to 100% electric vehicle (EV) deliveries by 2033, aligning with its goal of achieving net-zero emissions across the food ordering and delivery chain within the next twelve years. This plan is part of the company’s broader commitment to sustainability, including efforts to drastically reduce its environmental footprint.
Over the coming decade, the company has placed a specific focus on making food delivery orders plastic-neutral. It plans to facilitate 100 million plastic-free food orders by 2025, minimizing the ecological impact of its services. This initiative involves adopting voluntary recycling measures to offset the plastic used in food deliveries.
“From a sustainability perspective, the government’s push towards EV adoption has received a commitment by platforms, including Zomato, that is looking at facilitating 100% deliveries through EVs leading to net zero emissions across the food ordering and delivery value chain by 2033,” said Ramesh Krishnamurthi, additional secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Zomato: Expanding food delivery solutions
Under its sustainability goals, Zomato is developing food ordering and delivery solutions tailored to the needs of the next billion customers. This includes a focus on making services more affordable, accessible, and diverse, without compromising on quality. The company is also committed to supporting the growth of 300,000 micro, small, and medium restaurant businesses and food entrepreneurs, strengthening the overall food ecosystem.
In addition to its environmental initiatives, Zomato is focusing on the welfare of gig workers. The company aims to improve the earning and saving capacity of one million gig workers through various programs, including upskilling initiatives, partnerships, and benefits.
“Over the years, gig work has democratized access to livelihoods by reducing entry barriers and providing improved income prospects for lakhs of people in India,” said Rakesh Ranjan, CEO of food delivery.
