TreeHouse Foods, Inc., a major player in the private brand snacking and beverage industry in North America, recently unveiled its 2024 ESG report. This document outlines the company’s advancements in its ESG initiatives throughout 2023 and sets the stage for continued progress toward its 2030 goals.

TreeHouse Foods specializes in the production and distribution of private label packaged foods and beverages. Spanning a range of categories from snacks and beverages to condiments and health foods, the company caters primarily to grocery retailers, foodservice operators, and food manufacturers.

In 2023, TreeHouse Foods embarked on a strategic ESG journey, starting the year with a detailed prioritization assessment.

“We focused on our ESG strategy in 2023, beginning the year with a prioritization assessment that helped us refine our areas of focus and guide our 2030 ESG Goals and this ESG report,” said chairman, CEO and president Steve Oakland. “Our progress against our ESG goals has benefited more than our environment and our communities — it has also strengthened our strategic partnerships with our customers on similar ESG journeys.”

Key environmental accomplishments highlighted in the report include a reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 4.4%, a 16.2% decrease in food loss and waste, and nearly a 17% reduction in water usage in manufacturing operations.

TreeHouse Foods: Beyond environmental sustainability

The report also sheds light on significant social contributions, including the conduct of an annual employee engagement survey that showed a two-point improvement year-over-year. Furthermore, TreeHouse Foods reported approximately USD $12 million in donations to charitable organizations and a 23% increase in Employee Resource Group membership, reflecting its commitment to community support and internal engagement.

On the operations front, TreeHouse Foods has made substantial strides. The company enhanced its supplier engagement through the distribution of a Responsible Supplier Survey, which assesses sustainability opportunities within its supply chain. Moreover, there was a 5% increase in the use of RSPO-certified palm oil and an 8% rise in the utilization of post-consumer recycled content, underscoring its commitment to responsible sourcing.

The integration of ESG considerations includes principles focused on reducing food waste, improving energy efficiency, and fostering employee development through a new online learning platform. This platform not only offers expanded learning opportunities but also plays a crucial role in promoting an equitable and inclusive work environment.

The 2024 report is aligned with the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) standards. Additionally, the company plans to publicly disclose its responses to the 2023 CDP Survey in September 2024, further highlighting its transparency and commitment to sustainable practices.
