Red Lobster has launched an Ocean Sustainability Challenge targeting middle school students across the United States, combining marine conservation with STEAM education. The initiative, launching February 5, 2025, invites student teams to develop innovative solutions for protecting oceans and waterways.

The program aligns with Red Lobster’s Seafood with Standards initiative, which focuses on traceable and sustainable seafood sourcing. Teams of up to five students will submit three-minute video presentations showcasing their solutions to marine ecosystem challenges.

“At Red Lobster, we know that protecting our oceans is vital for future generations,” says CEO Damola Adamolekun. “The Red Lobster Ocean Sustainability Challenge embodies our commitment to sustainability by empowering young minds to think critically, innovate, and contribute to safeguarding our marine ecosystems.”

Red Lobster: Fostering Next-Generation Environmental Solutions

The challenge offers significant incentives for participation. Top teams will receive free registration for the 2025 FIRST Robotics competition, while the grand prize includes an all-expenses-paid trip to California to meet ocean sustainability innovators.

Beyond competition, the initiative aims to strengthen connections between Red Lobster restaurants, educators, and conservation organizations. The program creates opportunities for local community engagement while promoting environmental stewardship among young students.

Educational Impact and Industry Leadership

The challenge represents a strategic approach to sustainability education, combining practical problem-solving with environmental awareness. By targeting middle school students, Red Lobster taps into developing minds at a crucial stage for environmental education and STEAM skill development.

This initiative reflects a growing trend among food service companies to engage younger generations in sustainability efforts. By requiring video presentations, the challenge develops communication skills alongside technical problem-solving abilities, preparing students for future roles in environmental science and conservation.

Community and Industry Engagement

Local Red Lobster restaurants will play a key role in the program’s implementation, creating direct connections between the company’s sustainability commitments and community action. This grassroots approach helps build awareness of marine conservation issues while strengthening the company’s relationships with local educators and environmental organizations.
