Planet A Foods, a European food technology company specializing in sustainable chocolate alternatives, has secured USD $30 million in Series B funding to support its international expansion and increase production capacity. The Munich-based company, founded in 2021, develops cocoa-free alternatives that address environmental challenges associated with traditional cocoa farming.

The company’s flagship product, ChoViva, offers a sustainable alternative to conventional chocolate by using sunflower seeds to create a product that maintains chocolate’s taste and texture while reducing environmental impact. This innovation aims to ease pressure on the traditional cocoa supply chain, which faces significant sustainability challenges.

Planet A Foods: Market expansion and production scaling

Since its founding, Planet A Foods has established partnerships with major industry players including Lambertz, Lindt, Rewe Group, and Deutsche Bahn, with its ingredients now featured in over 20 products across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The company plans to enter the UK and French markets in the first quarter of 2025.

The new funding will enable Planet A Foods to significantly increase its production capacity from 2,000 to over 15,000 tons annually through a combination of in-house facilities and strategic partnerships. The investment round was led by Burda Principal Investments and Zintinus, with participation from World Fund, Bayern Kapital, Cherry Ventures, Tengelmann Ventures, BayWa Venture, and Omnes Capital.

“This Series B round marks a major milestone for us,” said Maximilian Marquart, CEO and co-founder of Planet A Foods. “With 30 million dollars in fresh funding and an industry-leading product, Planet A Foods is no longer just a start-up – we’re now on the way to becoming a leading food-tech player reshaping the sustainable food industry.”

The investment reflects growing market interest in sustainable alternatives to traditional food products, particularly in sectors with significant environmental impacts. Planet A Foods’ expansion plans demonstrate the increasing scale and viability of sustainable food alternatives in the global market.
