Nestlé Research & Development (R&D) is expanding its innovation capabilities in Singapore with support from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), focusing on developing sustainable food solutions and packaging technologies. The investment aims to strengthen the company’s ability to address global food security and environmental challenges.
The expanded R&D center will focus on key sustainability areas including alternative proteins, hybrid plant/dairy products, sustainable packaging, and digital transformation. These efforts align with growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible food products across Southeast Asian markets.
The company plans to increase collaboration with local enterprises, including startups and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), to develop sustainable products and manufacturing solutions. These partnerships have already yielded tangible sustainability outcomes, including a recent collaboration with local startup KosmodeHealth.
This partnership resulted in the development of high-protein and fiber noodles made from upcycled spent barley grains, representing a circular economy approach to food production. The initiative received recognition as the “Most Transformational Collaboration” by the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce in 2023.
“For over 40 years, our R&D Center in Singapore has played a key role in developing products and technologies for Southeast Asia and globally, for well-known Nestlé brands,” stated Guglielmo Bonora, Head of Nestlé R&D Singapore.
Nestlé: Creating jobs in sustainable innovation sectors
The investment will support the creation of new roles ranging from chefs to engineers and product developers focused on sustainability innovations. The facility, which includes the Nestlé Quality Assurance Centre (NQAC), currently employs more than 200 people.
Melissa Guan, Acting Vice President & Head, Consumer at EDB, noted that the expansion aligns with Singapore’s Job Transformation Map for the Food Manufacturing industry, with capabilities focused on “innovation, digitalisation and sustainability.”
Regional hub for food technology development
Established in 1980, the R&D Center has developed numerous products for regional markets. The facility has contributed to innovations including sugar reduction technology for beverage products and new coffee experiences for both hot and cold applications.
“Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, Singapore is well positioned to tap into the region’s rich culinary heritage and novel food trends to create innovative products in Asia, for Asia and beyond,” said Rajat Kumar Jain, Managing Director, Nestlé Singapore.
The expanded research capabilities aim to accelerate the development of more environmentally responsible food products while addressing the nutritional needs of consumers across Southeast Asian markets.
