IKEA Canada is expanding its plant-based food offerings in late Fall 2025 as part of a new all-round menu, introducing sustainable alternatives alongside globally-inspired dishes that reflect Canada’s cultural diversity. The expansion aligns with IKEA’s broader sustainability strategy, which defines sustainable food as “food that is responsibly sourced with a commitment to animal welfare and that is plant-rich.”

The menu expansion builds on IKEA’s HUVUDROLL plant-based ball, launched in 2020 to replicate the original meatball’s flavor while offering healthier and more sustainable choices. The new plant-based options include plant ball nachos with pico de gallo and jalapeño aioli, and eight-piece plant balls with roasted potatoes, scallions, pesto and parmesan cheese.

IKEA’s global sustainability strategy emphasizes dietary shifts toward plant-rich foods, with commitments to “increase the number and variety of plant-rich and plant-based food options” and utilize behavioral insights to make plant-based choices “easier and more enjoyable for customers.” The company defines “plant-rich” meals as at least 75% plant-derived ingredients.

“At IKEA Canada, we believe food should be joyful, inclusive, and accessible to all,” said Elena Pozueta Larios, Head of IKEA Food at IKEA Canada. “Our new all-round menu is a celebration of the beloved meatball in all its forms—bringing together bold global flavours and sustainable ingredients that reflect the rich diversity of Canada.”

The new offerings will be available in Swedish Restaurants and Swedish Delis across IKEA’s 16 Canadian locations, complementing the classic eight-piece meatball dish that remains a customer favorite.

IKEA’s broader sustainability commitments

The menu expansion reflects IKEA’s comprehensive sustainability strategy, which targets halving greenhouse gas emissions across its global value chain by 2030 compared to 2016 baseline levels. The company’s climate commitments include developing “sustainable products and food offerings with a lower carbon footprint, such as increasing plant-based and plant-rich food options, reducing the amount of red meat.”

IKEA’s sustainability framework encompasses three focus areas: Healthy & Sustainable Living, Climate & Nature & Circularity, and Fair & Equal practices. The company commits to sourcing primary deforestation-linked commodities free from links to deforestation, forest degradation, and natural ecosystem conversion by 2030.

Under its Healthy & Sustainable Living objectives, IKEA aims to promote plant-rich diets, reduce food waste, and support behavior change toward sustainable consumption patterns. The strategy emphasizes making sustainable choices “the default option” through product development and marketing initiatives that inspire customers to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.
