IFFCO Group, a UAE-based multinational FMCG group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tetra Pak, a world leader in food processing and packaging solutions.

This collaboration, part of IFFCO’s ESG-based strategic plans in Saudi Arabia, marks a step towards enhancing sustainability initiatives within the group’s manufacturing facilities. Ultimately, the partnership aims to minimize the group’s environmental impact by implementing global standards in advanced practices and technologies.

“Together, we introduce advanced equipment and processes that reduce waste, enhance recyclability, and lower CO2 emissions.”

IFFCO Group markets a variety of brands, spanning over 20 food and personal care categories. This includes impulse foods, agribusinesses, and oils and fats, among others.

The group is set to expand its operations in Saudi Arabia with the construction of a state-of-the-art factory, emphasizing local production of sustainable, high-quality products. The facility, initially focusing on culinary creams, aligns with Saudi Arabia’s economic goals and environmental protocols, prioritizing waste reduction, emission lowering, and green industry standards.

IFFCO and Tetra Pak: Sustainability initiatives

IFFCO’s recent ESG report outlines its sustainability goals and practices, including efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, working towards net-zero targets, decreasing waste generation, using environmentally friendly packaging, and addressing water scarcity.

Executive director Rizwan Ahmed called the partnership a “natural follow-up” to this. “IFFCO has since the very beginning, committed to a mission to manufacturing and marketing a well-integrated portfolio of FMCG food products that satisfy taste, quality and consumer demand without undermining our ethical values and commitments to eco-awareness throughout all processes and practices,” he said in a statement.

He added: “By working with the global expert Tetra Pak, we are actively contributing to ensuring sustainability at the plant, enhancing reliability, package recyclability, energy efficiency, and waste reduction, employing local skilled personnel and underpinning the country’s economic growth and future ambitions while strengthening IFFCO’s standing in the region as an advocate for change, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and lowering our carbon footprint.”

IFFCO has forged partnerships with local suppliers and third-party entities as well, encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices.

“We are thrilled to partner with IFFCO in this impactful project in Saudi Arabia, reflecting our commitment to protecting people, food, and the planet,” said Tetra Pak Arabia Area managing director Niels Hougaard.

“Together, we introduce advanced equipment and processes that reduce waste, enhance recyclability, and lower CO2 emissions. Our innovation prioritizes water efficiency, recycling and reusing processed water, with state-of-the-art and energy-efficient equipment. Every package tells a story, and we eagerly support IFFCO’s leading role in the GCC.”
