Consumer protection group calls on Goldilocks to adopt cage-free egg sourcing

International consumer protection group Equitas Global is pressuring Philippine bakery giant Goldilocks to adopt cage-free egg sourcing policies, highlighting food safety risks associated with battery cage systems and growing industry adoption of higher welfare standards.

International consumer protection group Equitas Global has launched a campaign calling on Philippine bakery chain Goldilocks to adopt a clear, time-bound commitment to phasing out battery cage eggs from its supply chain. The campaign emphasizes both food safety concerns and animal welfare considerations associated with conventional egg production systems.

The advocacy follows an investigation by Equitas that documented conditions at FJ Wegon Farms, a facility that supplies eggs to SM Bonus, which are subsequently used in Goldilocks products. The investigation revealed what the organization describes as overcrowded, unsanitary cage conditions that raise both animal welfare and food safety concerns.

Food safety risks linked to battery cage systems

Equitas Global’s campaign centers significantly on food safety arguments, particularly regarding salmonella contamination risks. According to the organization, global studies indicate that caged egg farms carry up to 33 times higher risk of salmonella infection compared to cage-free systems.

The food safety concerns are particularly relevant in the Philippine context, where public health experts have raised alarms over multidrug-resistant salmonella. A recent study by the University of the Philippines Diliman – Institute of Biology identified drug-resistant pathogens in chicken sold in local markets, highlighting the growing risk of foodborne illnesses that are increasingly difficult to treat.

In 2024, the Department of Science and Technology reported a 42% increase in salmonella cases, pointing to poor handling and contaminated production environments—including those for eggs and poultry—as contributing factors. This data underscores the potential public health implications of sourcing practices in the food service industry.

“These systems are not only deeply inhumane. They also threaten public health. It’s time Goldilocks followed the lead of more responsible companies,” said Dana Taborosi, Campaign Manager at Equitas Global.

Industry trend toward cage-free sourcing

The campaign occurs within a broader context of industry transition toward cage-free egg sourcing. Over 30 countries have banned or are phasing out battery cages, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, India, and several U.S. states. This regulatory shift reflects growing recognition of both animal welfare and food safety considerations in egg production systems.

In the Philippines and across Asia, several major food service brands have already committed to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs. Companies including Red Ribbon, Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Tim Hortons, BreadTalk Philippines, Cinnabon, and Auntie Anne’s have established timelines for transitioning their egg sourcing to cage-free systems.

According to Equitas Global, Goldilocks remains one of the few major bakery chains in the Philippines without a published timeline or commitment to ending its use of battery cage eggs, despite earlier public statements suggesting the company was reviewing its sourcing practices.

The campaign reflects evolving consumer expectations regarding food sourcing transparency and corporate responsibility in supply chain management. Equitas Global positions its advocacy within the framework of consumer protection, arguing that customers deserve access to information about production methods and associated risks.

“We urge Goldilocks to act responsibly and commit to ending the use of caged eggs in its supply chain. Customers deserve food that is not only safe but also ethically sourced,” Taborosi stated.

The organization’s approach combines animal welfare advocacy with consumer protection messaging, reflecting broader trends in food industry campaigns that emphasize multiple stakeholder interests including public health, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare.

Global movement toward higher welfare standards

The campaign against Goldilocks occurs within a global context of increasing corporate adoption of higher animal welfare standards in food production. Companies worldwide are shifting to cage-free systems in response to consumer demand, regulatory changes, and evolving safety standards.

The transition toward cage-free systems represents one aspect of broader discussions about food production methods, supply chain transparency, and corporate social responsibility in the food service industry. These discussions increasingly incorporate multiple considerations including food safety, animal welfare, environmental impact, and consumer preferences.

Equitas Global’s campaign strategy focuses on positioning cage-free sourcing as both an animal welfare issue and a consumer protection concern, reflecting the organization’s stated mission to promote consumer protection and animal welfare in corporate supply chains.

The organization has established a dedicated website at www.GoldilocksCruelty.com to support its campaign efforts, providing additional information and resources related to its advocacy for cage-free egg sourcing policies at the Philippine bakery chain.

As the food service industry continues to evolve in response to changing consumer expectations and regulatory frameworks, campaigns like Equitas Global’s reflect ongoing debates about corporate responsibility, food safety standards, and supply chain transparency in emerging markets.
