Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) is making a significant investment of over 11.5 million Euros in its Northampton brewery to enhance sustainability in production operations.

This investment focuses on integrating energy-efficient, high-performance equipment, notably the Innofill Can DVD filler and the Innopack Kisters Nature MultiPack (NMP) packer from KHS. These advanced machines are pivotal in CMBC’s efforts to reduce water consumption and plastic usage in packaging.

A key aspect of this investment is the introduction of the Snap Pack Nature MultiPack, a secondary packaging system developed by KHS and the Carlsberg Group. This system, which has become the primary packaging style for multipacks of four and six cans at the brewery, includes popular beers like Carlsberg Danish Pilsner and San Miguel.

“By taking ambitious action now, we can deliver on our sustainability goals and enable even more of our innovative Snap Pack multipacks to make their way to consumers.”

The Snap Pack uses minimal adhesive to create stable packs, significantly reducing plastic usage. With the new Innopack Kisters NMP packer, CMBC expects to double the production capacity to up to 108,000 cans per hour, leading to a potential 76% reduction in plastic usage compared to traditional multipacks.

“Energy-efficient lines and machines and safe, environmentally-friendly packaging systems are key components of our sustainability strategy,” said executive vice president of Market Zone Europe at KHS, Edgar-George Petsche. “With this latest investment in our pioneering packaging system and the trust shown in our flexible can filler, we’re proud to be helping to responsibly protect our climate together with CMBC as their reliable partner.”

Carlsberg Marston’s further advancements

The Innofill Can DVD filler, coupled with the FS14 can seamer from Ferrum, is set to enhance efficiency and operational reliability in the filling section. This filler’s small hygiene zone and optimum sterile air flow contribute to its high performance, with a capacity of up to 90,000 cans per hour in various sizes. Furthermore, CMBC’s investment in these technologies is projected to reduce water consumption by up to 10% annually, saving around 18 million liters each year.

This initiative is part of CMBC’s broader sustainability efforts under its ‘Together Towards ZERO and Beyond’ ESG strategy. The strategy includes ambitious targets like achieving ZERO carbon emissions and more efficient water consumption across all its breweries by 2030.

“We take our responsibility as a brewer very seriously and ensuring we reduce our impact on the planet is a hugely important part of this,” explained CMBC CEO Paul Davies. “This major investment of more than 10 million British pounds [equivalent to 11.5 million Euros] in Northampton demonstrates our clear commitment to eliminating packaging waste, reducing water waste and improving efficiency at our breweries.

“By taking ambitious action now, we can deliver on our sustainability goals and enable even more of our innovative Snap Pack multipacks to make their way to consumers.”
