PepsiCo has recently achieved its 2025 goal of enhancing operational water-use efficiency by 25% in high water-risk areas, surpassing the target two years early. Additionally, the company earned a spot on the 2023 CDP A List for its leadership in water security, ranking in the top 0.5% among 21,000 evaluated companies.

This accomplishment aligns with PepsiCo’s pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) initiative, which embodies the company’s holistic transformation strategy. With a continuing commitment to water stewardship, PepsiCo aims to achieve net water positivity by 2030.

“Water is a fundamental human right and yet water insecurity remains a significant global challenge with billions of people lacking access to safe water,” said Jim Andrew, PepsiCo’s chief sustainability officer. “That’s why good water stewardship is so important and has long been a priority for PepsiCo and the communities we serve.”

PepsiCo: Water stewardship commitments

Key initiatives contributing to this achievement include the adoption of innovative technologies and best practices, such as:

  • Revamping the corn washing process for snack production on over 100 global lines, potentially saving over 640 million liters of water annually.
  • Introducing membrane bioreactor technology at 21 sites worldwide, including 14 in high-risk water areas, to purify and reuse process water, significantly reducing freshwater demand by an average of 70%.
  • Utilizing water naturally present in potatoes to support operations in India, Mexico, Poland, and Thailand, saving up to 60 million liters of water per site each year.

“Our vision is that wherever in the world we operate, water resources will be in a better state than before we arrived,” added Andrew. “And while we’re proud to have achieved this goal in high water-risk areas two years early, we will continue our unyielding focus on meeting our 2030 ambitions.”
