Mondelēz International has announced the introduction of advanced recycling technology in the packaging of its Triscuit Crackers. By sourcing plastic linked to advanced recycling methods — also known as chemical or molecular recycling — the company aims to incorporate a more sustainable approach to its packaging across most of its product line in the US and Canada. This initiative is part of Mondelēz’s broader goal of achieving 5% recycled plastic content by 2025.

Up to 50% of the plastic used in Triscuit’s protective bag-in-box liner films will come from this advanced recycling process, contributing to a more circular economy. This move complements the existing outer box for Triscuit crackers, which is already made from 100% recycled paperboard with 35% post-consumer recycled content. Through these efforts, Triscuit aims to divert over one million pounds of plastic waste from landfills each year.

“We are excited to implement this innovative technology for Triscuit cracker packaging,” said Caitlin Schell, Marketing Director for the Triscuit brand. “By embracing advanced recycling technology for our product, we are not only helping to reduce reliance on fossil materials but also supporting a more circular economy for packaging at large.”

Mondelēz International collaborates with industry leaders such as Berry Global Group and LyondellBasell, whose manufacturing sites have been certified under the ISCC PLUS standard. This partnership aims to enhance the recycling infrastructure necessary for sustainable packaging solutions. Lou Fenech, Research Fellow in Packaging Sustainability at Mondelēz, noted, “We strive to continually enhance our packaging with the aim of supporting a more circular economy.”

Mondelēz and Triscuit: Prioritizing sustainability

In addition to its focus on sustainable packaging, Triscuit is also committed to sourcing wheat more sustainably and giving back to American communities, including the farmers who grow the wheat for its crackers. The brand has actively worked to gather on-farm data to improve environmental metrics such as water use and greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, Triscuit supports initiatives like the Joint Monarch Venture to aid in monarch butterfly conservation by restoring pollinator habitats within wheat-growing farmlands.

With over 100 years of history, Triscuit Crackers are crafted from 100% whole grain wheat, oil, and salt, and are committed to being Non-GMO Project Verified. Mondelēz International empowers consumers to snack right with its vast portfolio of iconic brands, including Oreo, Ritz, and Cadbury, and reported net revenues of approximately $36 billion in 2023.
