CP AXTRA Public Company Limited, operator of Makro and Lotus’s wholesale and retail businesses in Thailand, has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving zero food waste by 2030. The company announced collaborative intentions with multiple sectors to lead Thailand towards a zero food waste society at the “THAILAND ZERO FOOD WASTE FORUM 2025,” held under the theme “Unite Forces, Reduce Waste, Add Value: Turning Challenges into Opportunities.”

At the forum, CPAXT emphasized its collaboration with state agencies, the private sector, and academic institutions to manage food waste through creative approaches that transform excess into new value while supporting the circular economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which targets reducing food waste.

The company’s operations cover waste management throughout the supply chain based on three main approaches. Upstream efforts focus on cooperating with producers and farmers on responsible cultivation and developing efficient logistics to reduce losses. Midstream operations manage in-store inventory to minimize waste via an automated ordering system, shelf-life extending packaging, and proper temperature-controlled storage. Downstream activities maximize food waste utilization, converting food waste into feed for Black Soldier Fly protein insects, lowering animal feed costs and generating high-quality animal feed and organic fertilizer.

At a separate event, CP AXTRA provided additional details about the “AXTRA Zero Waste: Less Waste, More Value” project, outlining two key initiatives. The “No Edible Food Wasted” initiative distributes surplus food that is still safe and of good quality to those in need, such as low-income families in communities. Conducted in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration under the BKK Food Bank initiative, together with the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and SOS, the program aims to strengthen food security while reducing food loss.

The “Zero Waste, Countless Benefits” initiative promotes sustainable food waste management by transforming waste into value through Black Soldier Fly farming, which helps farmers reduce feed costs, develop new products, and increase income while advancing the circular economy.

“Zero Waste, Countless Benefits is more than just a concept—it is a practice embraced across all Makro and Lotus’s stores under CP AXTRA,” said Siriporn Dechsingha, Chief Corporate Sustainability and Communication Officer at CP AXTRA Public Company Limited. “Through green innovations in food waste management, we turn what was once discarded into value for society, farmers, and the environment, supporting the circular economy and driving progress toward our goal of zero food waste by 2030.”

Economic impact and employee engagement

In 2025, the project diverted over 15,000 tons of food waste from landfills, creating more than 76 million Thai baht (approximately 2.2 million dollars) in economic value for Thai communities and farmers. The results demonstrate the potential of turning waste into value while furthering the circular economy, supporting farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises by maximizing resource use, reducing carbon emissions along the supply chain, and promoting sustainable products.

CP Axtra also continues its “AXTRA Green Together” project, cultivating a culture of employee engagement in energy conservation, waste separation, and efficient resource use, with the goal of making sustainability an integral part of employees’ work practices.

Siriporn added that CP AXTRA firmly believes achieving zero food waste by 2030 through the “AXTRA Zero Waste: Less Waste, More Value” project will not only reduce environmental impact but also create sustainable value for society, the economy, and people’s quality of life. “The company continues its mission ‘Sustainability as the organization’s core root’ to grow securely and sustainably with society,” she said.

The company’s approach demonstrates how retail operations can implement circular economy principles at scale, converting food waste that would otherwise contribute to landfill emissions into productive resources for agriculture and animal husbandry.
