Cargill’s 2024 Impact Report highlights progress in sustainability and environmental initiatives

Global food corporation Cargill has surpassed its 2025 emissions reduction target ahead of schedule while advancing regenerative agriculture practices across North American farmland.

Cargill has released its 2024 Impact Report, detailing progress in ESG initiatives across its global operations, supply chains, and community engagements. The report highlights significant advancements in sustainability goals and environmental protection efforts.

The company has invested USD $100 million in efficiency and sustainability projects within its operations, achieving a 15.8% reduction in operational emissions against its 2017 baseline. This surpasses its 2025 target of 10% reduction ahead of schedule. Additionally, Cargill has advanced regenerative agriculture practices across 1.1 million acres of North American agricultural land since 2020 and restored more than 38 billion liters of water in water-stressed regions.

“Cargill depends on both nature and people to do our business,” said Pilar Cruz, chief sustainability officer at Cargill. “Protecting the earth’s resources — and those who rely on them — is embedded into our company’s purpose. Our sustainability journey starts with farmers, whose actions influence the entire food ecosystem.”

Cargill: Environmental and operational achievements

The report, published November 11, also highlights the company’s community engagement efforts, including:

  • Distribution of more than $130 million to support partners and local communities
  • Provision of 34 million meals globally through corporate giving efforts
  • Delivery of over 700,000 farmer trainings focused on sustainable agriculture practices and market access, totaling 7.2 million farmer trainings since 2017

Brian Sikes, board chair, president and chief executive officer of Cargill, emphasized the company’s role in sustainable food production: “Many of the strategies that make agriculture more sustainable can also make it more productive and efficient, while improving the health and vibrance of our communities. That’s why we see this as more than a challenge; it’s an opportunity the world is counting on Cargill to capture.”

The initiatives reflect Cargill’s commitment to addressing global food system challenges while promoting environmental sustainability and community development. Through these efforts, the company aims to balance the demands of feeding a growing world population with responsible resource management and sustainable practices.
